1. What was your initial vision for this project, and how did it evolve during the design process?
The client envisioned a warm Mediterranean vibe, a space where they could relax and entertain. From the start, I wanted to weave in local Portuguese elements, such as traditional azulejos, to root the design in its Lisbon setting. The goal was to create a terrace that felt bright, airy, and inviting—almost like an extension of the sky above it. As we moved through the design process, the vision became more refined, blending Mediterranean warmth with clean, contemporary touches to make the space both stylish and practical.
2. Were there any specific challenges or constraints (e.g., budget, space limitations) you faced during this project? How did you overcome them?
Uniting two terraces into one cohesive space was a significant challenge that required technical expertise and careful planning. Additionally, we wanted to install large glass panels to protect the space while preserving the view. However, bringing these panels into the terrace was tricky—they were too large for the narrow staircase and couldn’t be brought in through the street. We had to think creatively and collaborate closely with our contractors to find a solution that maintained both the design intent and practicality.
3. How do you balance aesthetics and functionality when designing a space?
For me, it’s about always asking how a space will be used day-to-day. Beautiful design is pointless if it doesn’t serve the client’s needs. On this project, we balanced aesthetics with functionality by incorporating durable, weather-resistant materials that would age gracefully while looking stunning. Every decision, from the layout to the materials, was made with both form and function in mind.

4. How do you approach working with artisans or collaborating with other professionals (e.g., builders, craftspeople)?
Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. In a city like Lisbon, where construction is booming, finding reliable and skilled professionals can be challenging, but it’s so rewarding when you do.
For this terrace, we also worked with Atelier 51 on the custom paint finish, and Janvier Plant & Design helped us select the perfect greenery to complement the design. These partnerships add so much character to a project. Working with local artisans and craftspeople is particularly meaningful to us—it’s a way to celebrate the region’s heritage and craftsmanship while creating something unique.
5. What was your main source of inspiration for this project?
The view itself was the biggest inspiration. Lisbon’s light and the vibrant energy of the city below informed many of the choices. We wanted the terrace to feel like a sanctuary above the hustle and bustle, where the client could enjoy the beauty of the surroundings while feeling at home. The mix of Mediterranean influences and Portuguese traditions naturally guided the design.

6. How did the client’s needs and preferences influence your design choices?
The client’s desire to create a space for hosting was central to the design. This informed the layout, which includes distinct areas for lounging and dining. We also incorporated seating that is both comfortable and elegant to encourage long, relaxed evenings with friends. The color palette and materials were chosen to reflect the client’s taste for understated luxury and natural elements.
7. What materials or elements did you choose to highlight, and why?
We collaborated with Stone Ceramic for the tiles and azulejos, choosing a light taupe for the flooring to keep the space bright and a bold green for the bench to add a lively focal point. Given that it’s an outdoor space, durability was key. We selected natural materials like a wooden coffee table and a rattan lounge chair that are both resistant and timeless. These pieces bring warmth and texture while complementing the clean, contemporary lines of the design.
8. Can you walk us through your design process, from initial concept to final execution?
It all started with understanding the client’s vision and needs. From there, we created mood boards to establish the aesthetic direction and worked on layouts that optimized the flow and functionality of the space. Once the concept was approved, we began sourcing materials and collaborating with artisans and contractors. Regular site visits ensured that everything was executed to plan, and we made adjustments as needed along the way. Seeing the final touches come together was incredibly rewarding—it’s like watching your sketches come to life.
9. How do you ensure that the final result reflects the client’s personality and lifestyle?
The client is always at the center of the process. We keep them involved at every stage, from the initial concept to the final installation, to make sure the design aligns with what they had in mind. For this terrace, we focused on creating a space that would feel like an extension of their home—a place where they could host effortlessly and enjoy quiet moments of relaxation.
10. What was the most rewarding aspect of this project for you?
For me, the most rewarding part was seeing the client’s reaction when the project was complete. There’s something magical about seeing a space go from drawings and ideas to a tangible reality, especially when it reflects exactly what you envisioned. Seing the joy of the client when he sees his new home is the ultimate compliment.
11. How does this project reflect your personal design philosophy?
This project encapsulates my love for clean aesthetics, natural materials, and working with local artisans. I believe good design should feel timeless yet personal, and it should honor the context of the space. The terrace is a perfect example of these principles in action—a harmonious blend of elegance, functionality, and a deep connection to its Lisbon roots.
