1. Can you introduce yourself?

Hello, My name is Catherine Gotlieb Lanselle. I am 60 years old. My professional background is rich and varied. I have a diploma in pedicure, a profession I practiced for 5 years in my own office before changing my life for the first time to work in the media, including Le Point, L’Express, RMC, BFM, Boursorama, and TF1 as Deputy General Manager (DGA). Then, life led me to large international groups where I handled communication. A year ago, I decided to change my life by prioritizing one of my passions: WORKING WITH WOOD. After numerous trainings in France, I opened a woodworking studio in Charneca de Caparica (south of Lisbon near the ocean), Atelier Lanselle. I love being an active participant in my life.

2. What brought you to this point (your professional background, education, events...)?

I fell in love with Lisbon and its region 15 years ago during a summer stay. When I started my woodworking training, I decided to open a workshop in Lisbon. Four years later, I fulfilled my dream. The colors of the city, the ocean, and the coastal environment led me to this dream.

3. Do you have a particular approach to your projects and designs?

I need to love the material, the idea, and the person. I need to understand the project. The project can also come from a seen shape – a branch reminds me of a Dogon ladder – a piece of furniture makes me want to twist it so it has a second life. I create, try, and test my ideas, and share them with my clients.

4. Is there a specific type of project you particularly enjoy working on?

Every new project is a new experience between the wood and me.

5. What motivates you to create?

The desire to exist.

The smile of my clients.

6. Where do you find your inspiration?

In nature, in art history, or in primitive arts.

7. How would you describe your creative process?

Good question. In my studio, I have a ritual: coffee, incense, and flowers are necessary for me. It’s my sanctuary, but when I start a project, I become obsessed with it and its realization. A piece of wood, a type of wood, a piece of furniture, everything has meaning and allows me to reflect on my desires. I test, I try!! I also like involving my clients in my research to be sure I understand their needs.

8. What do you think is your best creation/project, and does it have symbolic value for you?
