Is Artificial Intelligence revolutionizing interior design?

We’ve made some research for you.

Interior designers must stay abreast of trends, new technologies, and continuously educate themselves to stay at the forefront of their profession. With the rise of AI, a potential for radical transformation opens up, changing the way they conceive and execute their projects.

But the real question is: do these tools have the ability to replace this profession, which is fundamentally a passion-driven career? At Studio Bisson, we were eager to dive into this exciting topic.

I.    What AI Can Bring to Interior Design and Decoration.

For Interior Architecture :

A.    AI-Assisted Design: A New Creative Horizon?

But how can AI intervene in the design phases? To better understand this, let's explore some key methods:

  • The most widely used: 3D modeling and rendering software. These tools enable the creation of 3D models of concepts and visualize what the finished spaces would look like. We specifically tested two tools: Point-E and GAUDÍ.

  • Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Solutions: These technologies, commonly known in other fields such as video games, for example, also find applications in interior architecture. Architects use them, particularly to present clients with simulations of final projects, enabling them to better envision the space and have an immersive experience.

  • Image Generation Tools: We tested two of them, Midjourney and Dall-E. Thanks to these advancements, the imagination of interior architects can take shape in just a few seconds. You only need to describe the desired image in a few words, and with a few movements, you get a rather realistic image. However, it's important to note that there are quickly noticeable limitations with these tools.

With this array of technologies, AI emerges as a true ally for interior architects, providing new creative perspectives to materialize their ideas.

B.     Finding Inspiration: AI in the Service of Interior Designers

These tools are primarily a way to find inspiration. No more fear of the blank page! For space designers seeking atmospheres, lighting scenarios, and layouts, AI emerges as a powerful ally. With this technology, ideas come to life in an instant, fueling inspiration and opening new perspectives.

Furthermore, by mastering these tools, AI can become an asset for sustainable design, offering the possibility to create interior architecture projects that are more environmentally friendly. Analyzing data on materials and proposing sustainable alternatives contributes to reducing carbon footprint.

  • Space optimization: AI can analyze data related to space utilization and propose layouts that optimize resource usage and minimize waste.

  • Selection of sustainable materials: AI can assess the sustainability of materials based on their composition, lifecycle, and environmental impact. Thus, it can recommend ecological and recyclable materials for interior projects.

  • Smart energy management: AI enables the implementation of intelligent energy management systems, adjusting lighting and air conditioning based on actual needs, thereby reducing energy consumption.

  • Product lifecycle analysis: AI can evaluate the complete lifecycle of products used in interior design, from manufacturing to disposal, to choose more environmentally friendly products.

What about interior design?

A.     Using AI to Predict Interior Design Trends: Anticipating Tomorrow's Styles

Anticipating trends in interior design is a major challenge for architects, as it requires constant awareness of the latest developments in the industry, an understanding of customer tastes and preferences, and a keen sense of creativity.

Traditionally, interior designers have relied on sources of inspiration such as trade magazines, exhibitions and social networks to identify emerging trends. However, these methods can be limited and sometimes subjective.

With the advent of artificial intelligence, interior designers in Lisbon now have a powerful tool for predicting interior design trends. AI can analyze vast data sets from a variety of sources, such as design blogs, architecture sites, social networks, furniture catalogs and much more. This information is then processed using sophisticated algorithms to detect patterns and weak signals indicating the emergence of new trends.

B.    Quick moodboard creation

Applied to interior design, layout and interior architecture, artificial intelligence is just as promising, generating fairly realistic moodboards in no time at all. Nothing beats manual work, but it can be a sketch for the designer, who can then bring his or her expertise and creativity to bear on improving it.

II.      LAI: A complementary tool rather than a replacement

Despite the remarkable advances made by AI in the field of interior design, it's important to stress that interior design remains a creative profession, requiring a deep understanding of customers' tastes and preferences. Human expertise remains irreplaceable in certain aspects of the business:

A.  Understanding customer needs and tastes:

AI can provide recommendations based on existing models, but it can't replace the empathy and interpersonal skills needed to understand each customer's specific needs.

Our added value lies in practical advice on materials, colors and space layout that can't be easily reproduced by a machine.

We have to work closely with our customers to study their preferences and specific needs. This requires close communication, empathy and interpersonal skills that AI cannot replicate.

B. Creativity and originality

Creativity and originalityInterior decorating often involves the creation of unique, creative design concepts that reflect the customer's personality. Human creativity remains irreplaceable in this field.

C.     Expertise in materials use

In-depth knowledge of different materials, textures and colors is essential to create practical and aesthetic designs. This expertise can only be acquired through human experience.

D.     Construction site supervision and shopping

On-site monitoring and real-time adaptation require a human presence, as does the passion for discovering unique pieces while shopping. As for shopping, it remains one of our favourite tasks! But above all, the pleasure of bargain hunting, of shopping, of visiting flea markets, of being proud to come home with your find... that's something artificial intelligence isn't about to take away from us.

E.    A productivity tool, not a replacement.

Ultimately, AI is more likely to become a useful tool for interior designers rather than replace them altogether. Interior designers who use AI to enhance their work can offer more personalized and efficient services, while using the technology to save time and increase productivity.

At Studio Bisson, we think it's a great exploration tool to lean on when you want to find inspiration, but it doesn't, at the moment, deliver a finished design. If artificial intelligence can one day generate 3D spaces, then yes, it will have a place in interior design.

Conclusion :

Artificial Intelligence has truly revolutionized the world of interior architecture, offering undeniable advantages in terms of assisted design, customization, space optimization, and environmental impact.

It is crucial to note that AI in interior design is not designed to completely replace human designers but rather to assist them and enhance their efficiency in the design process. Creativity and understanding of clients' needs remain key elements that only a human designer can bring to a project.
